what is shab e barat?
The holy Shab-e-Barat or the night of fortunes will be observed across the India tonight with devotees seeking divine blessings for the wellbeing of mankind and the Muslim Ummah.

The Muslim devotees will pass the night offering special prayers, recitation from the Holy Quran, holding milad mahfil, zikr, and other religious rituals to mark the occasion with due solemnity.

They will also visit the graveyards of their relatives and Muslim saints overnight and distribute sweets and homemade foods among the poor, their neighbours, friends and relatives.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police imposed a ban on fireworks, explosion of crackers and carrying all types of firearms, explosives and other harmful objects, in the city from 6:00pm today "until further order to maintain the sanctity of Shab-e-Barat."

President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages felicitating Muslims on the occasion.

In his message, Zillur Rahman said, "The auspicious night of Shab-e-Barat brings a special opportunity for mankind to get blessings and mercy from the almighty Allah."

Mentioning Islam as a religion of peace, he called upon all to pray to almighty Allah during the holy night to grant national prosperity and progress and unity of the Muslim Ummah.

In her message, Hasina said, "Allah forgives those who seek mercy from Him and grants prayers of His creation on the night called night of fortune."

She urged all to work sincerely for welfare of mankind and building the country imbued with teachings of the night.

She also called upon all "to implement the sprit of Islam, a religion of peace, in all spheres of personal, social and national life by rising over all types of parochialism."

On the occasion, the Islamic Foundation and other religious and socio-cultural organisations will hold Qurankhwani, milad mahfil and discussions.

Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private TV channels will air special programmes, while newspapers will publish articles highlighting the significance of the night.
